WERKSTATTGESCHICHTE is a journal dedicated to critical and innovative historiography. It is aimed at those who see history as a field of experiment and (re-)construction. Depending on the types of questions raised, its nature can change. The journal offers space to reflect on historical events and the figures involved in them, but also on how historians perform research and write their texts. It is open to new forms of retelling the past whilst moving beyond conventional perspectives. The main focus of WERKSTATTGESCHICHTE is on social history, but the journal also embraces the idea of a “comprehensive history” based on concepts of people’s history, cultural history, and gender history. Challenging outdated approaches calls for both interdisciplinarity and perspectives that go beyond individual periods and regions. Diachronic, transnational and non-European perspectives are an essential building block of the journal’s concept.
WERKSTATTGESCHICHTE is published three times a year. Each issue contains articles pertaining to a feature topic, ranging from the early modern period to the 20th century. An additional section features commentaries on current debates as well as methodological issues. The third section contains about ten reviews and commentaries on exhibitions, films and conferences that deal with historical topics.
The feature topic sections of all issues (except for the two most recent volumes) are freely accessible in full text on the internet. All review sections are available online. WERKSTATTGESCHICHTE can be purchased via local bookstores.
