The Zeitschrift für Historische Forschung (ZHF) [Journal for Historical Research], founded in 1974, is the only German journal which is dedicated to both the history of the Late Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period. The concept is based on the idea of viewing the Pre-Modern Era in Europe as one structural unit, stretching from the High Middle Ages to the Reformation Era and revolutionary watershed events around 1800. With regard to its content and methodological framework, the ZHF reflects the diversity of approaches within German historiography. In addition to its focus on the history of political and constitutional history, the journal is also open to contributions from the field of religious and scientific history, the history of ideas, and also legal, social, and economic history. Next to articles, reports on current research projects and book reviews are regularly included. About 200 recent publications are reviewed by experts each year. The journal also publishes a biannual feature issue.
All submissions are subject to peer reviewing prior to their release. Since 2009, an international board of advisors has supported the editors in this procedure.
The reviews are published on recensio.net six months after the initial release (Moving Wall).
